It’s frustrating to graduate college and then not being able to get a job because employers disdain your lack of experience. So my question use to be: How do you expect me to have experience if you don’t offer me an opportunity? Magic answer to this question is: Internships. The sooner you start them the better. Don’t wait until your junior or senior year to start. Besides getting a foot in the door with a potential employer and looking good on a resume, internships have other advantages:
Possible college credit or certification: What can be better than this? Getting paid (some of the time) acquiring real experience and getting college credit?
Chances to network: Networking is interacting with other people to exchange information and develop contacts, especially to further one’s career. Yes, you can attend a networking event without doing an internship, but you would be limiting yourself. Being an intern gives you more opportunities to build connections with company professionals that can be very beneficial for your future career, it allows you to establish deeper relationships than you normally would talking to a stranger one-on-one.
Resume Builder: “How do I get a job interview?” Well, there is one specific section on your resume that employers will be more interested in than any other section. EXPERIENCE. Internships are the perfect way to get that relevant experience as appose to a part time retail job (not that is anything wrong with that). When employer’s see that you have done one or multiple internships it will go a long way in convincing them that you are an asset to their company.
Test drive a career: It gives you the opportunity to experience what it’s like on a day to day basis. A real life perspective on the occupation: How much time is spent behind a desk versus in the field? Am I more comfortable working with patients or in a lab? Would I be happier in marketing or advertising? It also gives you an introduction to the field’s culture and etiquette.
& here is a secret: you can compete for a higher starting salary. Graduates who participate in an internship will likely earn more than students who did not intern since then have more experience in their fields.
